THE POSITION

Step into a role where your work makes a difference every day as an Unemployment Compensation Tax Technician with the Department of Labor & Industry, Office of Unemployment Tax Services (UCTS). Working in the Status Determinations Unit, Registration and Document Management, you will have the opportunity to determine compliance with the taxing provisions of Pennsylvania UC Law regarding employers located in and out of Pennsylvania. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position helps ensure employers follow the requirements of the Pennsylvania Unemployment Compensation Law by reviewing employer registrations, wage information, and compliance matters. As an Unemployment Compensation Tax Technician, you will perform the following duties:

  • Registration Review:
    Examine employer registration documents for completeness, accuracy, and proper determinations

  • Wage Reconciliation:
    Investigate differences between reported wages and claimant statements using knowledge of wage definitions in state law

  • Compliance Tasks:
    Handle matters involving bulk sales, civil assessments, and employer or administrator liability inquiries

  • Communication Duties:
    Respond to written and telephone inquiries with clear and detailed information

  • Report Preparation:
    Compile weekly summaries of investigation workloads and hearing activities

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment.
  • Work hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Hours may vary based on operational needs.

  • Telework:
    You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to three days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

  • Salary:
    Starting salary is non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • Successful completion of the Unemployment Compensation Tax Technician Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of experience in maintaining financial records, bookkeeping, tax preparation, or clerical accounting; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Legal Requirements:
  • This position will have access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and is subject to the provisions of IRS Publication 1075 (Pub 1075) which requires you to pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment. Under Pub 1075, acceptance of a conditional offer of employment will require submission to and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to: a fingerprint-based federal records check; a PA State Police clearance; a check of local law enforcement agencies where you have lived, worked, and/or attended school within the last five (5) years; and a citizenship/residency verification.
