WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
This position is part of the Division of Alaska Wildlife Troopers. The Public Safety Technician 1/2 Flex performs technical level work in the prevention and detection of violations and the enforcement of laws and regulations. In addition, this position performs semi-skilled work, frequently in remote field locations, to ensure that mobile facilities and transportation equipment are operational, and assists Troopers with surveillance and patrol duties, evidence handling and preservation. No State Housing is Available.

As a Public Safety Technician, 1/2 Flex you will have the opportunity to work in varying outdoor environmental conditions as well as some time spent in an office setting. You will be performing semi-skilled work, frequently in field locations, to ensure that mobile facilities and transportation equipment are operational. You will also help with equipment inventory and perform general clerical duties as needed.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
- Set up camp independently in a wilderness situation.
- Experience using hazardous equipment, such as firearms, chain saws, etc.
- Experience operating boats more than 24 feet in length.
- Ability to perform general building maintenance, to include plumbing, electrical andcarpentry repairs; and
- Ability to spend long periods of time in close quarters while at sea on vessels between29-156 feet in length.

Minimum Qualifications
Public Safety Technician 1 Minimum Qualifications (Range 9)
Public Safety Technician 2 Minimum Qualifications (Range 11)
AND
Six months of experience performing patrol and surveillance duties and identifying, recording violations, and documenting criminal activity. This work experience is met by service as a Public Safety Technician 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Six months of field experience involving fish or wildlife management, habitat protection. This experience includes work such as a Fish and Wildlife Technician with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Six months of experience as a commercial fisher; licensed hunting or registered sport fishing guide; or assistant, deckhand, or similar person who worked directly under the supervision of, and on the same vessel/hunting trip as, a licensed or registered guide.
OR
Six months of qualifying military experience that involved working outdoors in inclement weather conditions, and patrolling and surveillance duties.
OR
Six months of experience performing semi-skilled duties working in and/or around aircraft. This experience includes work such as general labor and maintenance of aircraft equipment and/or facilities; cleaning, washing, and/or assisting with fueling aircraft to return to field; or other support tasks.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the 1 or 2 levels, depending on the applicant’s training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level of the position. If filled at a lower level, promotion to the higher level will only occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, and the applicant meets the minimum qualifications of the higher job class, and final approval by the supervisor. It is recommended and encouraged that you apply for any level for which you qualify.

This position requires the use or possession of a firearm or ammunition. In accordance with the federal Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 (PL 104-208), if you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, you may not hold this position.
A "misdemeanor crime of domestic violence" is an offense that is (1) a misdemeanor under Federal or state law; and (2) has, as an element, the use or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by a current or former spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabiting with or has cohabited with the victim as a spouse, parent, or guardian, or by a person similarly situated to a spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim.
If you have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, do NOT apply for this position.
BACKGROUND CHECK
This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.
CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT
The successful candidate will be required to read, understand, and agree to via signature, an agreement of confidentiality concerning the work commonly encountered within the Department of Public Safety to qualify for this position.
