GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is a very responsible position involving the preparation and maintenance of the Town of Columbia and the Columbia Board of Education payroll as well as related work. Duties include collecting payroll information, preparing payroll, processing payroll, maintaining payroll records, preparing payroll reports, and other routing clerical tasks. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction of the Finance Director. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: • Compiles payroll information and prepares payroll for the Town of Columbia and the Columbia • Board of Education on an alternating bi-weekly basis. • Enters all payroll and related personnel information into the payroll system. • Ensures the accuracy of all payroll earnings, deductions, and taxes prior to sending payroll for processing; including balancing payroll reports to related spreadsheets prepared for processing payroll. • Runs payroll reports prior to and after payroll is processed. • Works with Accountant on maintaining the payroll records. • Verifies that all staff for the Town of Columbia and the Columbia Board of Education has their payroll paperwork in order and maintains a payroll personnel file for each employee. • Updates the payroll system and related payroll personnel files for any changes in employee personal information and deductions. • Answers employee questions regarding payroll checks. • Maintains leave records for the Town of Columbia and the Columbia Board of Education employees including, but not limited to vacation, sick, personal and holiday leaves. • Prepares agency checks and mails them out in a timely manner. • Enters manual checks or adjustments into the payroll system. • Prepares paychecks for distribution. • Communicates with the Finance Director and with the payroll system consultants on any problems or needs in the payroll system. • Performs other duties or tasks as requested or required by the Finance Director. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of payroll procedures and practices. • Good skills in the use of standard office machines, including computer, calculator, telephone, and calculator. • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. • Ability to maintain confidentiality in respect to payroll matters and other related personnel matters. • Ability to work under pressure and with frequent interruptions. • Ability to multi-task as well as concentrate on detail and complex issues related to payroll. • Ability to distinguish between public and confidential information and handle appropriately. • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and associates. QUALIFICATIONS: Associates degree in Business or Accounting, or experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by course work in bookkeeping and/or considerable experience in payroll processing and general office work. REPORTS TO: Finance Director Note: Job descriptions are subject to change as the Board of Selectmen deems necessary.

Pay: $30.00 – $31.50 per hour
