Interested in joining a fast-paced, highly specialized legal environment? The Department of the Prosecuting Attorney is seeking a Legal Clerk I with foundational legal experience in a law office to support attorneys handling criminal cases. This role is ideal for candidates with exposure to legal terminology, legal documents, court processes, filing systems, and legal office practices, who can thrive under deadlines and maintain accuracy in a high-volume setting.
What You’ll Do:
- Process incoming cases for Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys (DPAs), including creating and organizing physical working case files
- Maintain, update, and correct electronic and physical case files using established legal procedure
- Prepare, format, proofread, and finalize legal documents for attorney review
- Perform electronic filing (e-filing) with the courts and distribute documents to the appropriate parties
- Coordinate with court personnel on hearings, trial schedules, and case updates
- Manage calendars and provide schedule updates to DPAs

Career Progression:
There is room for career growth as you work to progressively advance in this job series from a Legal Clerk I up to a Legal Clerk IV position. Experienced and knowledgeable legal clerks can later apply to be a Supervising Legal Clerk I, and advance up to Supervising Legal Clerk II with satisfactory work experience and demonstration of applicable knowledge and skills. (Note: Absent additional qualifications, these classes of work will NOT normally progress to Attorney positions.)

Minimum Qualification Requirements
At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
One year and six months of clerical experience, six months of which must have involved clerical and typing work in a law office.

Business school or college-level credits from a regionally-accredited college or university will substitute for experience on a month-for-month basis for the required general clerical experience.

Relevant education and training from a regionally-accredited college or university in a legal office administration, legal assistance, legal secretary, paralegal, or law program may be used to substitute for the required clerical experience in a law office. The amount of time credited for the substitution will be dependent on the specific program you completed.
APPLICABLE SKILLS NEEDED
- Familiarity with legal terminology, procedures, forms, and documents
- Experience with legal e-filing systems and legal office practices
- Strong grammar, spelling, and written communication skills
- Typing proficiency of at 40 net words per minute
- Maintain and organize legal records accurately
- Working knowledge of word processing and computer systems
- Basic understanding of the court’s actions and related legal process
- Work effectively under deadlines and time constraints
- Communicate professionally with staff, attorneys, and the public
