Job Title: Patient Access Representative / Financial Counselor
(Contract – 6 Months)
Onsite
Full-Time | 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (Set Schedule, Every Other Weekend Required)
The minimum hourly pay rate is $36.61.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Insurance Verifier / Financial Counselor to join our team. This role is responsible for verifying insurance eligibility, benefits, and authorizations, while also providing financial counseling to patients across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong knowledge of healthcare billing processes, insurance plans, and patient financial responsibility, while maintaining a professional and patient-focused approach.
Key ResponsibilitiesInsurance Verification
- Verify insurance eligibility, benefits, and authorizations for all patient types
- Ensure timely notification to insurance carriers for new admissions
- Obtain required authorizations and tracking numbers
- Complete verifications 2–3 days prior to scheduled services
- Ensure Medicare verification via Common Working File and Medi-Cal via Passport/government systems
- Reconcile daily activity with census and schedules
Financial Counseling
- Conduct financial screenings and credit assessments
- Educate patients on financial responsibility, payment plans, and available resources
- Collect patient liabilities including deductibles, co-pays, and past due balances
- Explore all payment sources including charity and Medi-Cal assistance
- Communicate non-covered services and financial obligations clearly
Documentation & Clerical Duties
- Accurately document insurance and financial information in patient accounts
- Review and correct billing information prior to bill release
- Scan and maintain required documentation
- Maintain accurate and detailed FUS notes
Communication & Collaboration
- Work closely with Financial Counselors, Case Management, Business Office, and other departments
- Communicate insurance changes and account updates
- Support training of registration staff on payor codes and financial classes
- Promote teamwork and assist coworkers as needed
Operational Excellence
- Maintain productivity regardless of workload volume
- Prioritize tasks effectively and meet daily deadlines
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies and confidentiality standards
- Demonstrate professionalism in all patient and team interactions
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Epic experience (required)
- Minimum 2 years of Business Office or Registration experience
- Strong knowledge of managed care and third-party payers
- Proficient computer and typing skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Medical Terminology knowledge
- Hospital experience (1+ year)
- Insurance verification or quality control experience
- Registration or Business Office background
