General Job Description

Serve as initial contact for the public at the precinct office; process prisoners and their property incidental to arrest and perform administrative, security, and computerized tasks in the disposition of precinct functions. Accurately communicate requested information to citizens, other employees and officials in accordance with the County’s quality service initiatives; commit few errors when making computer system inquiry or entry; strive to present favorable image of department; photographs and fingerprints are processed without smudges or defects; maintain prisoner security without outside assistance; provide assistance to co-workers upon request; report building security violations and/or unusual circumstances; promote teamwork by sharing information useful to achieving desired results at the front desk and within the precinct; and consistently demonstrate commitment to both County and departmental mission and values.

Duties for this Position

  • Serve as the first point of contact for all individuals entering the police station.
  • Respond to walk-in inquiries from the public, providing assistance, directions, and information about police procedures.
  • Intake and process reports for non-emergency matters such as lost property, vandalism, or harassment.
  • Log and document all public complaints or concerns and direct them to the appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain and update station records, incident logs, and case files in accordance with departmental policies and legal standards.
  • Prepare and submit routine reports, including daily activity summaries, arrest logs, and property reports.
  • Provide basic information to citizens regarding County government and services.
  • Process and file documents related to criminal investigations, citations, arrests, and warrants.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Handle incoming and outgoing correspondence, including subpoenas, affidavits, and internal memos.
  • Proficiency in typing and data entry.
  • Skill in utilizing computer applications such as word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

Position Minimum Requirements

Knowledge of:

  • Criminal codes – Federal, State and County.
  • Computer applications.
  • Legal forms and papers (such as warrants, summonses, and subpoenas), their execution and routing.
  • Departmental/precinct policies, rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Geography of the County and surrounding areas.
  • County services and agencies.

Ability to:

  • Maintain a calm demeanor under stressful circumstances.
  • Identify and deal effectively with people who are experiencing personal crisis or have other special needs. Examples may include individuals who are homeless, HIV positive, intoxicated, possess physical or psychological disabilities or who are experiencing other stressful personal situations.
  • Work independently in an environment of frequent interruptions and changing priorities.
  • Extract and evaluate information to determine level of service required and to distinguish civil versus criminal matters.
  • Function effectively during periods of high work volume and to remain alert during less productive times, such as computer downtime or on late evening shifts.

Additional Information

Minimum:
High school or GED plus six (6) months of clerical experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must be at least 21 years of age; and possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license. Must pass required pre-employment written exam, interview panel, physical exam, background check, polygraph examination, and psychological examination. Must be able to maintain required level of proficiency in the use of firearms. Must possess a willingness to travel as needed to carry out essential job duties. Must have SCCJA Class I certification.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid South Carolina Driver’sLicense. Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record in compliance with County Driving Standards. Special skills or equipment certification will be required.

Special Requirements
Must be able to work rotating shifts (days/evenings/midnights) including weekends and holidays and be available to work overtime when required to meet operational needs. Must be able to work rotating precinct assignments.
In addition to the regular rotation of shift and precinct assignments, additional changes may be necessary to meet coverage requirements and operational needs. Every effort will be made to provide reasonable notice of these changes. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned.
