Position Overview

Under the direct supervision of the RN Charge Nurse, the Unit Secretary coordinates selected patient activities between the nursing unit and other internal departments. This role is responsible for maintaining and organizing patient medical records, nursing unit activity files, and transcribing medical orders accurately and completely. Additionally, the Unit Secretary ensures proper maintenance of unit equipment and supplies to support the nursing team.

Compensation is commensurate upon education, experience, certification, and internal equity. Hiring compensation range starts from $15.50 /hour.

Compensation is commensurate upon education & experience – range is $15.50 /hour or more (depending on education & experience). Benefits begin the first of the month following 60 days of employment from the new hire orientation date. This position is a non-exempt position.

Key Responsibilities
Coordinate patient activities between the nursing unit and internal departments.
Maintain and organize patient medical records and nursing unit activity files.
Accurately transcribe medical orders and ensure timely communication of updates.
Monitor and maintain appropriate unit equipment and supplies.
Provide administrative support to nursing staff to ensure efficient unit operations.
Communicate effectively with healthcare teams to support high-quality patient care.

Position Requirements

Minimum Education:

High school graduate or General Education Degree (GED) required.

Experience:

Clerical experience preferred, particularly in a healthcare setting.

Required Registration/License/Certification:

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required.
Crisis Prevention (CPI) certification required within one year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate records.
Knowledge of behavioral health terminology.
Proficiency in computer and typing skills.
Ability to work under pressure and handle stressful situations effectively.
Capacity to complete required Behavioral Health training successfully.

Physical Demands
Lifting, positioning, pushing, pulling, and/or transferring up to and greater than 50 pounds.
Manual dexterity and mobility required.
Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods.
Frequent bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.
Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.

Working Conditions
Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases.
Frequently exposed to hazards from electrical, mechanical, or power equipment, odorous chemicals, and unpleasant elements such as slippery surfaces.
Subject to irregular hours, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Continuous standing and walking for periods equal to or greater than 8 hours per shift.
Continuous sitting for periods equal to or greater than 4 hours per shift.
Speaking, reading, and writing for extended periods greater than 8 hours per day.
Exposed to vibration and cramped spaces for more than 1 hour per day.
Frequent mobilization of patients for more than 4 hours per day.
Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling over 50 lbs per shift.
Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, turning, and reaching.
Frequent hand, finger, and wrist repetition with moderate dexterity.
Frequent exposure to soft voices at distances greater than 3 feet.
Frequent close eye work.
Infrequent exposure to ionizing/non-ionizing radiation, including x-ray and microwave exposure.
