The recreation supervisor is tasked with management over programing, events, concessions and user experience of all parks facilities. This position supervises all customer service associates at the Box Cañon Visitor Center and the Ouray Hot Springs Pool and Fitness Center. This position is responsible for all business operations including cash handling, revenue generation, and tracking / updating concessions. This position works in tandem with the Aquatic facility manager, the parks and facility’s manager and all other parks staff to foster community connectedness and wellbeing.

Works under the general supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director
Provides close to general supervision to the CSA Team at Box Cañon and the Ouray Hot springs. Acts as a manager on duty when staffing and patron numbers warrant in the absence of the Aquatics Coordinator. Supervises the via ferrata rangers during the summer months. Supervises the park program coordinator to ensure program quality, marketing and enrolment.
Administrative Functions: Plans, prepares, operates, and evaluates the Snack Shack, special events, business programs and other activities and programs as assigned by the Parks Director. Expected to coordinate with the Park Operations team and the Ouray Hot Springs to efficiently organize events for Parks facilities.
Attends all staff meetings, in-services and training sessions; prepares monthly in-services for the CSA team; coordinates and instructs CSA trainings. Coaches CSA team members in Customer Service and Cash Handling to ensure a thorough understanding of processes and expectations.
Facilitate seasonal recruitment of all CSA staff (job fairs). Facilitates interviews for CSA positions.
Manages timesheet and approves payroll edits for CSA staff; participates in annual evaluations of direct reports; creates weekly shift schedules for CSA staff.
Plans, organizes, advertises, and implements special events within a given budget, tracks revenue/cost of programs; creates reporting for programs and special events. Schedules and organizes group reservations to ensure sufficient staffing and customer service.
Assists with customer service and cash handling operations; maintains the monetary and transaction processing systems of the pool facilities. Plans all business activities for the Hot Springs Pool.
Monitors snack and merchandise inventory needs.. Submits, tracks, and evaluates orders and inventory of supplies for sale. And orders as needed.
Contributes to department initiatives identified in the Ouray Parks and Trails master plan including coordination with partner organizations, community engagement and capitol projects
Shift Operations: Oversees and coordinates the daily activities of CSAs and business practices; monitors situational and seasonal needs to ensure an adequate number of CSAs; determines number needed or sending CSAs home, as necessary; assists & monitors CSA attendance as it relates to punctuality and consistent attendance; ensures that CSAs are appropriately clocked in/out of the time clock; monitors CSA compliance with work attire policies and the wearing of required logo gear or name tag while on shift.
Performs opening and closing procedures; assures all systems are properly functioning; secures doors and other accesses; ensures CSA shift duties are completed.
Interacts with the public to assist in the customer service operations of the pool.
Ensures the CSA team completes daily tasks and performs cash handling procedures effectively.
Works closely with the tourism and marketing team to ensure all event information and marketing needs are communicated to the public.
POS/Memberships: Ensures accuracy of data input related to pool membership, gym card, and concession purchases; performs and monitors proper membership processing; oversees utilization of gym card database; oversees and performs processing of refunds, completes appropriate request forms and follows established processes and procedures according to policy. Reconciles pool and Box Cañon “point of sale” (POS) transactions monthly and generates reports.
Customer Service: Communicates honestly, effectively, and respectfully with members of the general public; properly conveys the rules, policies, and programs of the pool and gym, and ensures all CSA’s provide the highest level of customer service; perform receptionist duties such as checking voicemails and answering telephone calls; maintains general knowledge of the City including surrounding recreational, dining and other opportunities; responds to inquiries, complaints, and suggestions.
Financial Functions: Monitors and maintains daily cash flow; performs reconciliation of receipts; prepares various data entry records and reports; assists with bank deposits and ensures accuracy of deposit instruments and makes bank runs; performs daily collection of locker rental revenues and deposits.
Permitting: Responsible for processing permits and park/ facility use applications for Via Ferrata guide services, facility reservations in all parks and public events. Invoices based on the city’s adopted fee structure for concerts, group reservations, activities, and private events.
Cashiering: Receives money for the payment of daily admissions, membership fees, sells concessions and merchandise, replenishes inventory as needed; computes amount due, returns correct change and issues receipt of payment; ensures checks are complete and correct.
Ensures all CSA’s perform daily shift closeout; balances cashier drawer; prepares bank deposit; receipts collection of credit card transactions.
At times this position may act as cashier when supporting staff roles are vacant.
Housekeeping: Assigns scheduled upkeep and maintenance of facility; to ensure cleans floors, walls, windows, water equipment, etc.; cleans and polishes; operates vacuum to clean carpeted areas; sweeps and dusts; monitors general activities of the facility to ensure safety.
Performs related duties as required.
1. Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or GED;
AND
- Three (3) years experience in customer service, as a business manager (restaurant experience preferred), cash handling, and staff supervision.
OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of basic mathematics related to cashiering and changing money; point of sale (POS) system; basic interpersonal communication skills. Clerical and office practices, procedures and equipment; computer usage and programs that include Google and Microsoft systems, social media posting and other related programs as needed; current office practices and procedures; telephone etiquette. Some knowledge of administrative procedures; public relations and interpersonal communication skills; and basic bookkeeping.
Skill in creating strong customer service teams for effective and efficient operations of a multi-million dollar facility by creating an excellent customer experience. Strong organizational and technology skills are required.
Ability to operate point of sale system; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, and the public, ability to communicate effectively, and efficiently. Ability to apply various software applications to prepare documentation and reports (i.e., Google and Microsoft systems); utilize social media platform(s) to post operations activities and events; verbally and in writing, exercise initiative, independent judgment, and act resourcefully under varying conditions; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; perform general bookkeeping; establish and maintain comprehensive records and files. Must be capable of typing 50 words per minute and lifting 50 lbs.
3. Special Qualifications:
This position requires evening, week-end, and holiday shifts.
Obtains lifeguard certification within 3 months of hire: must pass pre-course swimming skills test prior to attending the Lifeguard certification course. Ability to pass performance proficiency tests based on American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and AED certification requirements.
4. Work Environment:
Employees in the position are exposed to seasonal weather extremes. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, pulling, pushing and lifting. Talking, hearing and seeing are essential to performance of daily tasks. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity is needed in the performance of essential duties. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, and creative problem-solving.
