Job Overview

We are seeking a diligent, personable, and highly motivated Ophthalmic Technician to join our startup retina practice. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys both clinical and administrative responsibilities, thrives in a fast-evolving environment, and is interested in long-term growth, with the potential to advance into a Lead Technician or Practice Manager role as the practice grows.

During the initial startup phase, this position will involve a combination of retina technician duties, scheduling, front-desk support, and administrative assistance.

Key ResponsibilitiesClinical / Patient Workup

  • Perform comprehensive ophthalmic workups including:
  • Visual acuity
  • Tonometry
  • Pupil function
  • Ocular motility
  • Confrontation visual fields
  • Assist with retina-specific diagnostic testing:
  • OCT imaging
  • Fundus photography
  • Visual field testing (as applicable)
  • Document chief complaint, HPI, medical history, ROS, and ocular findings accurately and in compliance with guidelines
  • Educate patients on medications and pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by the physician
  • Administer topical ophthalmic medications per physician direction
  • Prepare, open, and close exam rooms; ensure proper cleaning, disinfection, and equipment readiness
  • Prepare patient charts and imaging for physician review

Front Desk & Patient Services

  • Greet patients and visitors in a friendly, professional manner
  • Answer phones, manage patient inquiries, and assist with scheduling
  • Maintain smooth patient flow in coordination with clinical care
  • Maintain a clean and organized reception and clinical area

Patient Registration, Scheduling & Insurance

  • Collect and enter patient demographics accurately into the EHR
  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits
  • Assist patients with forms and registration
  • Schedule appointments based on physician availability and clinical needs
  • Send appointment reminders (phone, email, or text)
  • Coordinate referrals to outside providers when necessary

Administrative & Startup Support

  • Assist with administrative tasks such as scanning, faxing, filing, and email correspondence
  • Help develop and refine clinic workflows and processes during the startup phase
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support practice growth

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required), Associate degree or
  • Preferred: 1+ year experience as an Ophthalmic Technician or in an ophthalmology/medical office setting
  • Retina experience a plus, but not required for the right candidate
  • Ophthalmic Technician certification a plus
  • Familiarity with:
  • Medical terminology
  • EMR systems
  • Insurance verification and scheduling workflows
  • Strong patient-care, communication, and customer-service skills
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and adaptable
  • Comfortable multitasking in a startup environment
  • Motivated to learn and grow into expanded responsibilities
