The Board of Nursing is charged with ensuring safe nursing practice in New Mexico. The Board works with advisory committees around the state that assist with our program for nurses with a substance use disorder. The agency issues licenses or certificates to nurses, technicians, and aides in 10 different categories. The Board also investigates complaints against Licensed Nurses and Certificate Holders regarding potential violations of the Nursing Practice Act, that occur in hospitals, nursing homes, care facilities, laboratories, personal care providers, and therapy settings. The Board of Nursing also conducts site visits at pre-licensure nursing programs, and training programs for hemodialysis technicians and medication aides.

Why does the job exist?

Promotes and provides license activities for the NM Board of Nursing. Provides complex clerical work management of licensure process of the Board of Nursing, which includes following state and federal requirements for criminal history background check, working with different data bases, obtaining NURSYS discipline and FITS information and legal documents for criminal charges.

How does it get done?

In accordance with the Nursing Practice Act (NPA), collects applications and fees for the individuals applying to be licensed as nurses through examination or endorsement and verifies accuracy of applications and fees prior to acceptance. Skill is needed in performing technical clerical tasks accurately and rapidly. Interacts in a positive manner with other staff and public. Provide administrative support for assigned BON Advisory Committee as assigned. Perform other BON duties as requested.

Minimum Qualification

High School diploma or Equivalency and two (2) years of experience as it relates to the essential duties of the classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Services are provided in various settings throughout the State to a diverse racial and ethnic population. Reaching and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds may be required. Travel to provide outreach and coverage to attend meetings and training sessions with the occasional overnight stay may be occasionally requested. This position does not carry the option to telework.
