Overview

Position:
Eligibility Advisor I – Temporary (VIC) in LAREDO, TX. This is a temporary position expected to end on 08/31/2027 with potential transfer to a regular position based on availability, tenure, and performance. The role supports HHSC Access and Eligibility Services (AES) in delivering integrated services to reduce institutionalization and promote self-sufficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Interview applicants and recipients in person or by telephone to obtain financial and personal information for determining financial eligibility for public assistance programs.
  • Evaluate data from various electronic and other sources to enter information into a computer-based eligibility system.
  • Compute and authorize benefits based on eligibility determinations.
  • Process work in accordance with state and federal regulations, established procedures, guidelines, and time frames.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Must be able to work overtime as required by management, including weekends when needed, and in a fast-paced, high-stress environment with deadlines.

Skills And Abilities

(KSAs)

  • Use fact-finding techniques to obtain, relate and evaluate information from applicants.
  • Read, understand, apply, and explain detailed regulations and policies.
  • Perform basic arithmetic functions and manage time efficiently by prioritizing deadlines.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships; communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Follow written and oral directions; operate computers for data entry and basic office software (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel).

General knowledge of computers and related technologies; familiarity with Microsoft Teams and soft phone technology may be required.

Qualifications and Education

  • Education
    :
    High School Diploma or GED required. Sixty (60) semester hours or ninety (90) quarter hours from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • Experience
    :
    One (1) year of customer service experience with public contact (e.g., retail, call center, clerical, hospitality, banking, etc.). Thirty (30) semester hours or forty-five (45) quarter hours from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of experience. Experience in interviewing clients and gathering personal information in-person or by phone is preferred.

Additional Information

  • Temporary Employment Agreement required upon hire; transfer to regular status may be possible based on position availability, tenure, and performance.
  • The posting may be used to fill positions in other locations within the region.

  • Applicants must bring I-9 documentation on first day; HHSC uses E-Verify.

Telework and Work Hours

This position may be eligible for telework in accordance with state and agency policies. Normal hours are Monday–Friday 8:00am–5:00pm; overtime and weekend work may be required as needed.
