Position Description

Job Summary

Reporting to the department head, this position serves as the fiscal and personnel support for the NRES department, and independently supports the day-to-day operations of the NRES Department to ensure departmental office alignment with university, college, and department policies and procedures. Administrative roles include but are not limited to fiscal management and planning, auditing of expenses and student and faculty workload, purchasing, administering the retention, promotion and tenure process for department faculty and lecturers, faculty recruitment, and hiring students and part-time lecturers.

Summary

The Natural Resource Management and Environmental Sciences (NRES) Department offers B.S. degrees in Environmental Earth and Soil Sciences, Environmental Management and Protection, and Forestry and Fire Sciences, and an M.S. in Environmental Science and Management. The programs enroll approximately 850 undergraduate students and 20 graduate students and are supported by 23 tenure-line faculty. These programs support student learning through on and off campus resources, such as Cal Poly’s 3,000-acre Swanton Pacific Ranch in Santa Cruz County, and out-of-class experiences including Instructional Related Activities, clubs and intercollegiate competitive events such as soil judging and logging team.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, university infrastructure, policies, and procedures including budget policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic financial management principles and practices including ability to analyze and track resource allocation and project needs as they relate to departmental operations.
  • Ability to perform standard business math, including calculating ratios and percentages, tracking financial data and making projections requiring some inference.
  • Ability to manage moderately complex scheduling and records; gather and compile financial data from various sources; and maintain detailed and accurate records.
  • Ability to learn, interpret and apply policies and procedures independently and use judgment and discretion to act when precedents do not exist.
  • Ability to take initiative, plan, organize, and prioritize work.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines, and strong attention to detail.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or its equivalent, 45 words per minute. Five years of general office support or technical experience. Training at a vocational school or full-time college education may be substituted for two years of the required experience on the basis of one year of college education for 6 months of experience.

Licenses, Certificates, Credentials

Possession of a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $52,404 – $62,628 per year
Classification Range: $52,404 – $76,512 per year

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for the role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
