We are seeking an experienced admin support associate to work fully in-person.
Experience with UNC systems and knowledge of CAS policies and processes strongly preferred.
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill is the state’s flagship program in this area of study, pursuing research and offering instruction in Asian and Middle Eastern cultures and nine Asian and Middle Eastern languages. The department offers an undergraduate BA with six different concentrations, nine undergraduate minors, and an MA. The department is involved in various study abroad programs, sponsors a wide variety of cultural and outreach events, and is a partner in many of the University’s global initiatives.
The department has 31 permanent faculty and around a dozen more temporary faculty, visiting scholars, and graduate TAs, all supported by a team of four permanent staff.
Position Summary
The Administrative Support Associate (ASA) is typically the first person encountered by visitors and callers to the department. Since the ASA is stationed in the department main office, they experience a very high level of interruption and distraction. The largest part of the ASA’s job is faculty support: answering questions, helping with tasks, informing faculty about policies and procedures, and directing them to other people and resources as appropriate.
The ASA’s many other duties include general office tasks like distributing mail and keeping copiers running. They will also be responsible for gathering, organizing, and maintaining records. The ASA will be the main person handling space issues for the department, which includes making space reservations and coordinating with Facilities as needed to handle issues in multiple buildings. They are also responsible for purchasing and parts of the department website.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Management Preferences
Familiarity with campus systems, policies, and processes.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be capable of walking around campus, climbing stairs, moving up to 50 pounds.
